What each award category means for your store listing
Nine categories, and most of them route through the same bottleneck: the product page a stranger sees before they decide to install. Here is the mapping.
| Award | What it rewards | What that means for your listing |
|---|---|---|
| Build & Grow Award | The grand prize. Real user traction and growth on a brand-new app. | Traction is installs, and installs are traffic times conversion. Your keywords bring the traffic; your screenshots decide whether it converts. |
| RevenueCat Design Award | Craft and design quality. | Judges see your store listing before they see your app. A default screenshot dump reads as unfinished no matter how good the UI is. |
| #BuildInPublic Award | Sharing your build journey on social media. | You need a steady supply of shareable visuals. Store mockups and before/after screenshot posts are the cheapest content you can make. |
| HAMM Award | Help Apps Make Money: revenue through RevenueCat. | Revenue starts at the install. A paywall converts nobody if the listing never earned the download. |
| Catvertising Award | Monetizing with RevenueCat Ads. | Ad revenue scales with active users, which scales with install volume. |
| Best Game Award | Games specifically. | Game listings live or die on the first two screenshots. Show gameplay, not a title screen. |
| Next Gen Award | Students only. No paid developer account required. | Still worth preparing real store assets. They carry over the moment you do publish. |
| RevenueCat Peace Prize | Apps built for social good. | Mission-led apps convert on clarity. Say what the app changes in the first caption. |
Sponsor categories are announced separately and are not listed here.
Every App Store asset you need for a 1.0
As of 2026 Apple requires only one iPhone size. Build the 6.9-inch set and App Store Connect scales it down to every smaller iPhone class, which means one export instead of four. Full breakdown in the App Store screenshot sizes guide.
| Asset | Size (px) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6.9" iPhone screenshots | 1320 x 2868 | Required. Apple scales this set down to smaller iPhones automatically. Up to 10 per localization. |
| 6.7" iPhone screenshots | 1290 x 2796 | Optional. Covered by the 6.9" set if you skip it. |
| 13" iPad Pro screenshots | 2048 x 2732 | Required only if your app supports iPad. |
| App icon | 1024 x 1024 | No alpha channel, no rounded corners. Apple rounds it for you. |
| App preview video | 886 x 1920 | Optional. 15 to 30 seconds, 30 fps, up to 3 per localization. |
Every Google Play asset you need for a 1.0
Play is looser on dimensions than Apple but adds one asset iOS has no equivalent for: the feature graphic, which is required and has exactly one valid size. It is the most commonly missed item on a first submission. See the Play screenshot sizes guide and the feature graphic spec.
| Asset | Size (px) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phone screenshots | 1080 x 1920 | Minimum 2, maximum 8. Each side between 320px and 3840px. JPEG or 24-bit PNG. |
| Feature graphic | 1024 x 500 | Required. Fixed size. Shown at the top of your listing. |
| App icon | 512 x 512 | 32-bit PNG with alpha. |
| 7" tablet screenshots | 1200 x 1920 | Optional unless you market to tablets. |
| 10" tablet screenshots | 1600 x 2560 | Optional unless you market to tablets. |
Shipping to the Samsung Galaxy Store as well? In practice your Play-sized phone screenshots and 512 x 512 icon carry over, but Samsung maintains its own listing requirements and they change more often than the other two. Confirm against Samsung's current seller documentation before you submit.
Metadata character limits, side by side
Write your copy against these numbers from the start. Rewriting a 42-character app name down to 30 the day you submit is how good names turn into bad ones.
| Field | App Store | Google Play |
|---|---|---|
| App name / title | 30 characters | 30 characters |
| Subtitle | 30 characters | No equivalent |
| Keyword field | 100 characters | No equivalent (Play indexes your description) |
| Short description | No equivalent | 80 characters |
| Full description | 4,000 characters | 4,000 characters |
| Promotional text | 170 characters | No equivalent |
The nine-step Shipaton launch checklist
In order. The order matters, because keywords feed your app name, your app name is unchangeable-ish once claimed, and screenshots are the only asset you can still improve after launch.
- 1
Pick your keywords before you write your app name
Your app name is the single most heavily indexed field in the App Store, and you only get 30 characters. Deciding it after the build is backwards. Run keyword research first, pick one head term you can realistically own, and put it in the name.
Run free keyword research - 2
Claim the name in App Store Connect early
App names are unique per storefront and reserved on a first-come basis. With around a thousand apps shipping in the same eight weeks, the obvious names go fast. Reserve yours as soon as you have one, well before you are ready to submit.
- 3
Design screenshot 1 as if it is the only one anyone sees
In search results most people see only the first one or two panels at thumbnail size. If a stranger cannot tell what your app does from panel 1 alone, nothing else on this list will save the listing.
Build your screenshot set - 4
Caption every screenshot with a benefit, not a feature
"Never lose a receipt again" beats "Advanced document scanning". Large type, high contrast, readable at thumbnail size.
- 5
Export at exact store dimensions
App Store Connect rejects uploads that are off by a single pixel, and a rejection on September 29 is a missed deadline. Generate at spec instead of resizing by hand.
Check every store size - 6
Fill all 100 characters of the iOS keyword field
Comma-separated, no spaces after commas, no words already used in your name or subtitle, no plurals of words you already have. This field is invisible to users, so there is no copy cost to maxing it out. Most apps leave 30 characters unused.
Which keyword goes in which field - 7
Budget real time for review, not optimistic time
App Review is usually fast but not guaranteed, and a metadata rejection costs you a full round trip. Submit with days to spare, not hours. The window closes September 30.
- 8
Localize your screenshots for your top two non-English markets
Translated captions on your existing designs, not new designs. Localized visuals routinely lift conversion double digits in those storefronts, and it is one of the few ASO levers you can still pull in the final week.
Localization guide - 9
Track your ranks from day one
Build & Grow is judged on growth, which means you need to show movement. Pin your keyword shortlist before launch so you have a baseline to grow from, then check weekly.
Rank tracking
The grand prize is a distribution problem, not a build problem
Close to a thousand apps launched during Shipaton 2025. Assume something similar this year. Most of them will be technically fine and functionally invisible, because a brand-new app has no ratings, no reviews, no backlinks, and no brand searches. Organic search inside the store is the only channel that will give you volume in eight weeks without a budget.
That channel has exactly two inputs. The first is whether you rank for anything, which is decided by the keywords you put in your app name, subtitle, and keyword field. The second is whether ranking converts, which is decided by your icon and your first two screenshots. Nothing else you do in those eight weeks moves install volume as much as these two things, and both are essentially free.
Input 1: rank for something winnable
Do not fight for "fitness". Find the long tail where the top 10 is not all household names, then own it. Ranking #3 on a small term beats #50 on a big one, because nobody scrolls to #50.
Free keyword research and rank trackingInput 2: convert the impression
Captioned screenshots at exact store sizes, benefit-led, readable at thumbnail size, ordered as a story rather than a feature dump. This is the highest-leverage afternoon of your whole launch.
Generate your screenshot setIf you are chasing #BuildInPublic
The hard part of building in public is not the writing, it is having something to show twice a week for eight weeks. Store assets are the easiest content you own: a device mockup of the screen you just built, a before and after of a screenshot caption rewrite, a side-by-side of two variants you are testing. All of it doubles as work you had to do anyway.
If you are testing variants, the screenshot A/B testing guide covers how to run it properly, and the results make genuinely good posts because almost nobody shares real numbers.
FAQ
What is RevenueCat Shipaton 2026?
Shipaton 2026 is RevenueCat's app-building hackathon. You ship a brand-new iOS, Android, or Samsung Galaxy Store app between August 1 and September 30, 2026, integrate the RevenueCat SDK for at least one in-app purchase or serve ads through RevenueCat Ads, and compete for over $1 million worth of prizes including more than $700,000 in cash. In 2025 close to a thousand new apps launched through it.
When is the Shipaton 2026 deadline?
Submissions run August 1 to September 30, 2026. Your app has to be released for the first time inside that window, so a project you already shipped does not qualify. Updates after the 1.0 release are allowed.
What do I need to submit an app to Shipaton 2026?
A brand-new app live in the App Store, Google Play, or the Samsung Galaxy Store, released for the first time during the window, with the RevenueCat SDK integrated for at least one in-app purchase or with ads served through RevenueCat Ads. The Next Gen Award is student-only and does not require a paid developer account. Check the official rules on shipaton.com for the current requirements before you submit.
What screenshot sizes do I need for a Shipaton app?
For iOS, a 6.9-inch iPhone set at 1320 x 2868 covers every current iPhone because Apple scales it down, plus 2048 x 2732 iPad Pro screenshots if your app supports iPad. For Google Play, phone screenshots at 1080 x 1920 (minimum 2, maximum 8) plus a required 1024 x 500 feature graphic. Off-spec uploads get rejected, which costs you days you do not have.
How do I win the Build & Grow Award?
Build & Grow is judged on real user traction, so it comes down to install volume on an app nobody has heard of. Installs are search traffic multiplied by store conversion. Traffic comes from ranking for keywords you can realistically own, and conversion comes from your first two screenshots. Both are set before launch day, which is why keyword research belongs at the start of your build, not the end.
How long does App Review take, and will it fit before the deadline?
App Review is usually measured in days rather than weeks, but it is not guaranteed and a metadata or screenshot rejection means another round trip. Treat late September as unusable and submit with several days of slack.
Can I reuse the same screenshots for the App Store, Google Play, and Galaxy Store?
You can reuse the designs, but not the exported files. The dimensions differ, and Google Play additionally needs a 1024 x 500 feature graphic that iOS has no equivalent for. Build the design once and export per store rather than stretching one set across all three.
Is SnapMonk affiliated with RevenueCat or Shipaton?
No. This is an independent launch resource written for builders taking part. Shipaton and RevenueCat are trademarks of RevenueCat, Inc. The official rules, dates, and prize details live on shipaton.com and the RevenueCat blog.
